Nestled deep in the heart of Rajasthan, Bera is a hidden gem in the Pali district—a secret haven where majestic leopards reign over the rugged terrain and few tourists venture. Once shrouded in obscurity, this mystical town is now emerging as the revered “Leopard Country,” beckoning wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike to witness its untamed beauty. Bera’s landscape is a captivating blend of rocky Aravalli hills, dotted with hardy scrub vegetation. Craggy hillocks, punctuated by shadowy caves, provide the perfect sanctuary for leopards, making it a coveted spot for those eager to capture these enigmatic felines in their natural realm.
Adding to Bera’s allure is the enchanting Jawai River and its dam, forming a tranquil waterbody that mirrors the hills, lending a surreal ambiance to the surroundings. This picturesque retreat is not only home to leopards but also shelters one of India’s largest populations of crocodiles, alongside a stunning array of resident and migratory birds.
Despite its rich biodiversity, Bera remains a lesser-known treasure, with its entire landscape classified as revenue land, leaving it outside the boundaries of a protected wildlife sanctuary. However, efforts are underway by the Government of Rajasthan to bestow Bera with the status it rightfully deserves—an official wildlife sanctuary that safeguards its most elusive resident, the leopard, and preserves the ethereal charm of this unspoiled wilderness.
